After Mazda retired the rotary RX-8 in 2012 many fans were wondering what's next...
CEO Masamichi Kogai said last year that the company has no immediate plans to release a successor to the RX-8, yet design cheif Ikuo Maeda muddled the water when he said he wants to revive the RX series.
Which brings us to the Tokyo concept teaser. Mazda says the design is modern with a “sense of lineage and authenticity, appearing almost to condense Mazda’s entire history of sports car development into a single model.” Considering the rotary is synonymous with sporty Mazda's theres certainly reason to believe this is an RX-Something. It certainly looks the bit too with a long hood, sculpted haunches and rounded fastback rear.
But there is another possibility, reports out there say that Mazda is planning a coupe based on the Mazda 6 platform, slotted to debut in 2017. This could be that, hopefully not.
The final possibility lay in Mazda's newest strategic partnership. We know Toyota is looking to bake a bit of Mazda mojo into their products, we also know Toyota has been having trouble with the 86 Project, Subaru reportedly unhappy. The 86 project has shown if anything that low cost sports cars don't sell, could this concept be our first look at a potential project between the two to build what ostensibly seems a rival for the 370Z and Ford Mustang?
We'll find out on October 28th.
