I am about to buy a CX3 with out a roof rack. The dealer will include one for "his cost" of $300. I pointed out that they are only $300 on the Mazda website (and I see I can buy one on-line for $210...). He said sure, but that is without labor; with labor they are $500 dealer installed.
At worst, it is $90 for the labor.

Does this seem like a fair deal on the roof rack?

I am getting a pretty good price on the car (at least I think I am) but I really hate leaving anything on the table.

If you don't mind installing it yourself you can get them from multiple dealers online shipped for about $210 - $250. It took me about 40 minutes to install it and that was mostly me being anal about cleaning the gutter well, torquing everything right, etc. That said, Mazda does MSRP them at $300, and many dealers offer them only at this price point.

Long story short, if you want the dealer to install it then that is not a bad deal (though I feel like with a bit more pushing you could just get it included, but that may not be worth the time and effort). If you are okay with self-installing it then I would pass and order one from one of the dealers that offer them for cheaper online.

It's an OK deal if you don't want to install it yourself.

With that said you could probably get them to throw it in for free... I used the line "you wont let me walk away from a purchase for $300" when they were being really stubborn about throwing navigation in, they still said they couldn't do it, I started to walk away and sure enough they wouldn't let me walk away for a $300 difference. Good luck!

I would let them do it too for that price and you have the added benefit knowing that it should be covered under warranty if something would go wrong.

I think I owe the dealer an apology. The $210 I found online is just for the side rails! The cross bars are an extra $120. So he is giving it to me for the same price I could buy the parts for.
So it is something of a bargain after all.

I got confused because on my Subaru there is nothing but cross bars that mount onto the roof.

300 is quite a good deal esp when you price it into a the total price of the new vehicle. Unless you are paying cash, 300 broken down into month payments is peanuts.

I had them do mine!

I could have bought the rails cheaper and had my husband install them, but he said he didn't want to mess with it for the difference in price since they would be covered by warranty if they did them. Also, he said if they scratched the paint when installing, they would have to fix it. He is extremely handy, but it is super easy to have a tool scoot outta place or the bar move unexpectedly and he just didn't want the worry on my new car. Just something else to consider
