I bought my mazda used and it came with Navigation SD card. The map is not up to date and I read that you get 3 years of free maps. I pulled the SD card out (Map is from 2016) and tried to up date using the Mazda Toolbox, however software said no updates available for this device even though there is 2018 Q4 map available. So, I bought a new SD card from ebay however, it also says no updates availalble for this device. I had to put SD card in vehicle before Mazda Toolbox could read it. So, it looks like the 3 years is tied to my vehicle not the SD card.

I emailed Mazda Toolbox support and they came with the following:

Hello Steve,

Thank you for reverting us at Mazda Handsfree Support.

No, buying of new SD card will not include 3 years map update you need to purchase a new maps subscription for it.

Anyone now how to get around this, or am I stuck buying the expensive subscription update from Mazda Toolbox?

Thanks

I'd like some information on this as well. I bought a 2016 CX3 in Nov 2015 and found out that the map on my SD card was at the end of its life. To get a new 3 year update I have to go through the same procedure as you. I am not sure how much it costs to update so I am also wondering if anyone has taken this route and how much were you charged?

Well, do not buy a new SD card from Ebay. It did not work for me. I bought one for about 100 dollars (not tied to previous VIN number) however like I stated in the original post same problem with a new SD card. One option is buy the updates from Mazda Toolbox but is over 100 for one year. Would rather but a standalone GPS with lifetime support then give Mazda 100 per year for new maps.

Hmmm...maps tied to the VIN date hey?
This is good to know.
So far I got one from Ebay for my 2018 CX-3 and have had no problems. I'm actually updating it, finally, as I type.
The second one I got was for my brother in law who just got a 2017 CX-5. Same thing with no issues.
I guess we'll find out in a couple years for sure lol.

That why I opted for Apple carplay I like the navigation better on the I phone and don’t have to pay for updates.Apple car play is not cheap but there are benefits to it.

late chiming in on this thread.
was looking to buy ebay sd card for gps.
i do not understand about updates after 3 years.
does it mean that the sd card stops working or any new
address, location or direction would not be found.

thanks

The card continues to work.
If you wish to have updates , a fee is required.

I suspect in the world of planned obsolescence with more people (such as myself ) choosing an Android Auto/Apple Car play option, the paying customer base will dwindle thus the infamous "no longer supported" is inevitable.

I updated my wife's NAV. The cost for 3 additional years was $138.00. Not bad IMHO. My Nissan is a lot more by the year. Just purchase the map update through Mazda Toolbox and they extend you three years.

That $138.00 for 3 years is reasonable considering that the Toyota dealer wanted $169.00 for a new map DVD for my wife's 2011 RAV4.

My question is what are they updating? I am sure it is different in most areas, but where I live, the GVRD (Vancouver), all the streets it thinks don't exist were build 5 plus years ago.

So I bought my car 3 1/2 years ago. Just before the 3 years were up I had them update my Nav chip/ card. BUT within 2 weeks I could see that it was still woefully out of date. Road changes made long before my car was built, were not coming up. I spoke with Mazda and was advised... it will cost you $... I am utterly unimpressed.

I don't believe ANY of the GPS's are up to date including phones. Can you imagine how many changes are happening in Australia as well as in the US or Europe? It would be impossible to keep up with all of them. Renewing the GPS update with Mazda is fairly cheap; 3 years for a little over 100 dollars USD. I renewed my wife's unit for that price but generally only get 1 to 2 updates per year. It works for us as trying to see a phone screen is just not safe or practical for our old eyes. LOL I guess you could go with a Garmin with lifetime maps, they update more often but no idea if that would help. Good luck.
