Hello everybody my name is Joe and I am building the first ever CX3 turbo! (gasoline). First I am not technically building it since the engine is mostly there and I am just making a custom manifold and exhaust for the turbo. Any how the guys at Orange Virus tuning are gonna make the whole setup come together with a proper tune. . I also found a camshaft upgrade for the 2.0 skyactive but not sure if the fuel pump lobe might cause problems. I have not heard or see anyone do this to a CX3. IMO they should of put that 2.5L turbo in the CX3. But here I am! Im interested if yall have heard or know of any aftermarket parts for the 2.0 skyactive. I have found pretty much everything aftermarket there is unless most of it is still in Japan. This project has been fun and I am really excited so please ask me anything!

I would be worried about setting off codes.
I'd be more worried about the heads, gaskets, valves, crank, rods, pistons & rings in an engine not designed for forced induction and already running pretty high compression ratios. Auto-ignition could become a problem. Codes would be probably the least of my worries. lol A proper engine tune, assuming you can get it running without blowing up, would include the fuel mapping, timing, etc. and should take care of most of the fault codes. O2 and MAF sensors would likely be the hardest to deal with, I'd guess.

Still, very curious to see how it turns out, but I'd be seriously worried about longevity of the build unless rebuilding the top and bottom end of the engine at the same time.

Turbocharging the SkyActiv 2.0 has been done so this isn't unexplored territory. There isn't a kit so everything has to be more or less built from scratch but it's not a huge issue.

The nice thing about DI engines is that you can (theoretically) control spark and fuel timing so it gives you more flexibility. The bad thing is that it creates more complexity.

It may be possible to use mazdaEdit from epifanSoftware to do the tuning. They list compatibility with the 3rd gen Mazda 3 with the same SkyActiv 2.0 engine. On the RX-8 at least, mazdaEdit allows pretty wide ranging controls over most of the engine.

Failing that, a piggyback system (Megasquirt or similar) would probably also work.

Yeah, turbocharging a SkyActive engine has been done before as evidenced by Mazda's own 2.5L engines in the CX-4 and CX-9, but it's not as simple as just slapping on a turbo and tuning some software if you want to do it reliably. Mazda has done some tricks to get their "dynamic pressure" turbo 2.5L from eating its own guts. Notably, Mazda says their turbo 2.5L SkyActiv engine has a compression ratio of only 10.5:1 where the naturally aspirated version is at 13:1 compression ratio.

Software alone can't fix added stress on rotating parts that likely weren't designed for those added stresses forced induction will create. I would imagine that any boost pressure added on this engine with a regular off-the-shelf turbo kit would need to be so limited, that I can't see it being worth the expense.

Mazda's next-gen SkyActive 2 engines are reported to be running similarly to a Diesel engine, intentionally using auto-ignition for its combustion cycle, and they say they won't need spark plugs at all. Those engines will be pushing total compression ratio up to around 18:1, which again is very diesel-like.

I just read up on Mazda 6 forum some posts from someone at Orange Virus and they are making claims of +100 hp at the wheels on the 2.0L at 1.2 bars of boost on otherwise stock drivetrain. That's on a Mazda 3 version of the 2.0G engine. I can't believe that they're able to do this and have any sort of reliability left in that engine. I certainly wouldn't trust it if it was my only car and I didn't have money to burn.
