anyone know where this is mounted?...in the block itself or in a coolant hose somewhere??....price for this option seems excessive!

Defa offers only contact heater that is mounted on the oil pan. It shouldn't take more than 1,5 hours to install. You can find heater for your car here:

Calix has better option (coolant heater) for petrol engine models.

What is the manufacturer for the heater they are offering to you?
In Finland price for Defa contact heater + interior heater is ~ 540 € including installation.
