Running out of gas!

I have about 550 miles on my CX3 and have so far gotten 19mpg.

Today I filled up. It said that I had 305 miles until empty. I figure that is 10 gallons until it shows empty, and they I will have about 2 gallons left. How many miles is that good for?

With my old car I drove it until I ran out of gas, noting how many miles past empty I got. (28 miles). I then put 2 gallons in and trusted I could make it to a gas station. I was told that was a terrible thing to do, as it would suck all the crud off the bottom of the tank. Don't know if that is true, but with 550 mile it should not have much crud, so the time to do it is now.

Garage
It's not only a bad idea because of crud in the tank, but because some (most?) pumps use the fluid they pump to keep themselves cool therefore running them dry will cause unnecessary wear.
Having said that, 19 miles/gallon X 2 gallons = 38 miles

Indeed running a fuel pump dry is the fastest way to kill it!

Keep in mind that those calculations by the dash are based solely on averaged data since reset (which you can reset by holding up and down buttons on the left side of the steeringwheel). For example if you reset on the middle of the highway and coast for a mile+ with very little 6th gear acceleration youll get a reading of like 79mpg which will factor into the equation for the miles to empty portion making it grossly estimate the actual remaining mileage. I usually hate saying this because its such 'broscience' but you will get to know-your-car in time and how much mpg you can get out of it based on your driving style and highway vs city etc. For all intents and purposes those numbers the dash tells you are algorithmic anomalies.
