Windshield surgery

Just got my windshield fixed. Cost $100 with insurance. Here's a pic of the surgery.

Did I miss something? What happened?

Some folks lube their brake calipers, or renew their sparking plugs ... others renew their windshield gasket/seals?

I would be very unhappy about him placing clutter on the hood and roof without covering them first.
