Driving with handbrake on, big problem?!

Hi guys,

First of all, nice to meet you! My name is Radu, I am from Romania, but I live in Poland. I got my CX-3 Thursday last week and I'm in love with it. It is a 2.0 AT AWD colour JetBlack.

Now here is my problem. Second day after we took it, my wife drove 7 km with handbrake on. It was not fully applied, maybe 2-3 teeth. Car was still able to go forward itself in drive without accelerating. It just smelt a little bit burnt when she arrived to pick me up.

As this is my first AT and AWD car, I have no idea what damage can happen. Can you let me know if I should go to dealer and tell them we broke the car after 4 days? ) Should I be worried?

As an excuse for my wife, compared to our old Mitsubishi Colt, that when driven with handbrake on beeps, the CX-3 doesn't... although both of them have huge red warning lights.

Thanks a a lot for your help!

You should be fine but have the dealership check out the rear brake pads and rotors to make sure that they are not damaged or heat spots formed. Since you didn't fully apply the brakes it should be ok but no harm in making sure. I have this happen a lot and check a lot of customer cars rear brakes for the same mistake. Usually not a big deal.

Thanks a lot, Snoogie. I thought other bad things can happen regarding awd or automatic gearbox... I am happy now!

What Snoogie said.

I'd bet you bedded the rear brakes in pretty well (which is a good thing) but if the car was able to move forward at idle, there couldn't have been much force.

Actually today I went to dealer to fit front parking sensors (for wife as well) and asked him to check the brakes. They said no harm was done and everything looks OK. So all good. Thanks for the link, didn't know those things.

Been there, done that! About 8 years ago I rode about 10 Km in my previous Subaru Forester with the handbrake partially on wondering why my car was suddenly acting so gutless. Then I wondered what where the burning rubber smell was coming from. When I stopped the car I could hear the clinking sound of metal cooling down from being almost red-hot. Just like you, there was no damage done but it sure caused me to be more careful when setting the hand brake. I haven't noticed, but I am sure there must be a dash light somewere that informs the driver that he has the hand brake on. I just haven't noticed it on the CX3.
