Hey guys, random question. I just figured out how to use the manual mode, but what RPM should I shift upward on and what is the safest way to downshift?

Up and down shifting is all based on the load you're placing on the engine. There is no magic RPM that we can tell you to shift up/down at aside from staying out of redline. If you're uncertain leave it in D then experiment in a safe environment.

I believe it will advise you on the display. It certainly did on my diesel auto.

Currently CX5 SportNav 2.2 diesel automatic and AWD.
Formerly CX3 SportNav 1.5 diesel automatic and AWD.

I don't know where the OP lives or what engine they have due to their blank profile but in the US we don't get that feature.

Really? Mine had the same graphics as the manual transmission. It shows which gear to select and when according to engine speed and load. The CX-5 does the same albeit on a different display. I'll try to photograph it tomorrow.

Euro models seem to be more concerned with fuel savings than ROW models. Hence you get the tree with leaves graphic that we don't get in the US.

Man, I am glad we don't have it! My ex-wife had a Ford Escort GT back in the day (for a small car, that thing drove like a tank) and the little yellow "shift now" light would come on at certain RPMs. It just about drove me crazy. Yes, I am a grown man; yes, I know when to shift and I will do so whenever the heck I want! I wish I could disable my wife's Fit's "economy" lights (one on either side of the gauges). They glow green when one is being "economical" and when one is ruining the environment, dark blue (it should be red with images of rising sea levels, melting glaciers and a lone polar bear on a piece of ice...)

It's on the aussie models too, but we have the EU emission standards so I imagine that would be the reason. It isn't too annoying as it does pick up when you're holding a gear to drive up a hill or down shifting to engine break.

That looks like an excellent feature for someone that is learning to drive stick, but should have the option of turning off.

Lol. I am in the usa. I've figured it out pretty well. You can upshift and follow standard upshift procedures. Also if you try and downshift dangerously the car doesn't let you do it. So its a pretty safe way to have fun!
