Overfilled the fuel tank, evidently...

I fueled up our CX yesterday and because the price was good I am afraid I put more in then I should have... DOH

After the fillup the car started up fine, check engine light and low fuel light were on and the bars in the gas gauge were perfectly straight lined (meaning NO fuel) in addition the miles to empty showed 11 miles. The car seemed to run ok so kept driving, magically the car started making fuel! The gauge very slowly went up. I figured I had to do a reset on the car when I got back home, but eventually it sorted itself out. Fuel tank showed full and no idiot lights.

Just for information if someone else does something like this... LOL

Garage
Sounds like the fuel level floats were stuck and needed to be worked free by letting the gas slosh around in the tank a bit.

Never heard of that happening but I suppose anything is possible.

Like Turbo100 does when filling the fuel tank of his car, I fill mine (Canadian 2016 GT) right to the ragged edge. I've never had a problem doing so. I do the same with my Canadian Mazda3 2.5 GT; no problems there, either.

I’ll top up to the top of the filler tube too. Tank is too small. Bad enough filling up every other day.
But I’ve heard issues on other cars with issues topping up and messing up the evap canister.

You have to keep in mind that the gas goes in quite cold (being stored underground) and if you live in a warm climate (I wish!) the gas may expand. So if you fill up to the top of the tube, it may start forcing its way through the seal of the cap and cause problems.
