I think it's a typo. He bought his around the time that I bought mine. it's a 2016 but purchased late 2015.
Based on what I saw for 3 years , they should pay us to do their occasional updates.
Google, Yahoo and Garmin ,to quickly name a few that come to mind, are free with regular updates. If somebody decided to actually spend money on the Mazda update, it looks to be less expensive to buy another SD card from eBay.
Now that Mazda finally decided to make Apple CarPlay/Android Auto available, likely a matter of time before their inferior system is discontinued.
..........and again based on CarPlay/Android Auto , Mazda will likely try to find a way to make the consumer pay for their lack of foresight.
didn't want to go bigger but the 2019 Toyota Rav4 trail edition may be next - not totally convinced to leave Mazda but still pissed about the fiasco of innuendo and leading customers to believe a minimal update for apple/android
